Texas-isms: Four-Legged-Friends-Inspired Verbs

Today, we’ll add more to your Texas verb knowledge. It’s no secret we love critters (aka varmints) in the Lone Star State, so I figured we could chat about actions inspired by our four-legged friends.

Pull the wool over [his] eyes – fool.

Ex. “I love thought he loved me, but he sure pulled the wool over my eyes.”

Chomp at the bit – anxious to do something.

Ex. “He was chomping at the bit to get to the picture show to see John Wayne.”

(Note: Some folks say “champing,” but with that word, I just picture folks with dentures trying to chew a steak.)

Hold your horses – wait.

Ex. “If you’d hold your horses a minute, I’ll be outta the ladies room. I’ve only got a dozen more hot rollers to put in my hair.”

Today is National Tartan Day. I’ll tell you what, if you can resist a man in a kilt, you’re a way stronger woman that I. One of the highlights of my entire life (besides my wedding and the birth of my son, of course) was watching a St. Patrick’s Day parade in Dublin, Ireland, where a trio of kilt-wearing men rode Harleys. I can promise you there wasn’t a woman standing in the crowd who didn’t want to find out what those guys were wearing under those skirts.

By the way, tomorrow is International Beaver Day, and I just couldn’t resist mentioning the holiday. For some reason, it just makes me giggle. (Okay, okay, I don’t really giggle. I snort.)
