Sri Lanka – Did It Live Up to the Pictures?

Big changes have happened in Kelsey Browning-land over the past couple of months. If you were reading Brain Candy in the spring, you know Tech Guy, Smarty Boy and I were Sri Lanka-bound in the end of June. Tech Guy stayed two weeks, but Smarty Boy and I were overseas for five and a half weeks.

So I thought I’d catch you up on a few of our Sri Lanka highlights today and then provide more details on our crazy life throughout the month of September.

I showed some early pictures of our SL accommodations back in June. So how did the pictures jibe (or not) with reality?

Hammocks…absolutely as advertised. They were favorites for afternoon naps and reading. Smarty Boy read nine books in five weeks. I lost count of how many I read, but rest assured it was probably more than I’d read in the prior six months!

Food…the curries were so yummy that we’re now inspired to learn to make our own back in the US. The potato rosti was tasty too.

Surfing…I have to confess I stayed out of that. I drank my fill of the Indian Ocean several years ago while snorkeling in the Maldives. Smarty Boy isn’t a surfing pro, but he learned a few moves.

Outdoor bathroom…no hot water, as expected. Good news is as warm as it was in SL, the cool water felt good. Other thing I loved about it? No worries about tracking water all over the bathroom. Just squeegee the whole place down once you “got out” of the shower. However, I made sure Smarty Boy knew to put down the toilet lid. I told him if I sat down on the toilet in the middle of the night and a frog was in there, he (SB and the frog) were dead meat.

Cabana…not luxurious by any stretch, but it worked for us. Thank goodness for the mosquito nets over the beds. Not so much for the mosquitos, but for keeping the squirrels (like American chipmunks) and mice out of the bed with you. The nets didn’t protect against ants, however. And to keep the squirrels out of your food stash, you had to lock any munchies up in a lockbox. Believe me, we learned that quickly when they chomped on our stash of trail mix the first night.

More on Sri Lanka to come…

Handily enough, today is National Wildlife Day. Just a taste of the wildlife we saw in SL: elephants, crocodiles, a cobra, goats, dogs, chickens, water buffalo and a whole lot more! If you haven’t visited a wildlife sanctuary lately, look up your closest one and get out there in the “wild.”
