Lessons Learned in Sri Lanka – Kelsey Browning

Lessons Learned in Sri Lanka

Yes, you’ve heard enough about Sri Lanka to last you a lifetime, so I promise this is my last post on the tiny (about the size of West Virginia) country.

Arugam Bay Beach

With all my travels, I’ve discovered each location—regardless of how exotic, frustrating, beautiful, crazy—has lessons to teach. These are a few of Sri Lanka’s for me:

  • Don’t forget the bottoms to your third bathing suit. When you’re at the beach, you need a dry one at all times. Even those closest to you don’t want to witness your white-buttedness on the beach.
  • Do NOT stand in croc poop. If a reptile’s been in that spot once, you can bet your sweet a$$ he’ll be there again. With or without you as a snack.
  • If the local food hasn’t made you sick, don’t look too closely at the kitchen. Just be thankful.
  • Appreciate American coffee. The coffee served at our guest house was a combo of what looked like tobacco and mulch.
  • Never underestimate the power of a cold beer or coke. When the electricity goes out with sporadic regularity (my paradox of the day), a cold drink can be the only thing between you and a drooling, fist-beating, heel-kicking hissy fit.

Today is Elephant Appreciation Day so be sure to say thanks to all the pachyderms in your life. Don’t have any, you say? Well, then feel free to appreciate the one’s in Tech Guy’s photos from our summer in Sri Lanka.

PS – Okay, I think Elephant Appreciation was actually last week, but heck, you know I don’t stand on ceremony around Brain Candy. So have you hugged your elephant today??
