How Do Authors Choose What to Work on Next? – Kelsey Browning

How Do Authors Choose What to Work on Next?

In early February, I turned in the final book in the Texas Nights series, Designed for Love. Other authors are aware the book isn’t done-done at that point. I still had developmental, line, and copy edits to go. But it was time to figure out what project to work on next because as soon as this book is through edits, I’m essentially out of contract. Both exciting and scary!

So how did I decide what project to tackle next?

Reality is, I’ve been working on several projects simultaneously:

  • A pair of novellas, sexy but not too sexy, that I have no idea if I’ll shop or self publish. I mainly started them to make myself happy.
  • A short story for The Granny Series which I co-write with Nancy Naigle. This one was important because it will be almost a year between book one in the series, In For a Penny, and book two, Fit to be Tied.
  • The first book in a new contemporary romance series. This one was already drafted, so I’m in revision mode on it and have high hopes for this series. Hopefully, I’ll have more news on this soon.
  • Random brainstorming and high-level plotting.

But when I don’t have a hard and fast deadline, I have to try to prioritize the work. Right now, the second book and a novella in The Granny Series get top priority because Nancy and I have readers clamoring for more Granny stories. Priority number two is the new full-length contemporary because I’m trying to sell the series.

But before any of these projects will be ready for readers, I still have two more Texas Nights books being released into the wild in 2014 — Problems in Paradise (July) and Designed for Love (November). I can’t wait for y’all to read Eden’s and Ashton’s stories!
