Organize Challenge Week #11 – Organizing Your Email

Okay, people, this is a biggie. A bury-your-head-in-the-sand biggie. Every day, we’re deluged with email and social media. Honestly, I think Berry should’ve used two weeks rather than combining them, so today, I’ll address only email. We’ll try to come back to social media on a light week.

But first…

Homework from Week #10

Homework: What goals do you have for organizing your magazines and newspapers?  Let me know in the comments!

Did you get a chance to clear out your paper reading materials? I tossed a few, set aside several to actually read and then placed the others in a bin where I store my collage materials. (More on my collage book in another post!)

Week #11 - Organizing Your Email

Email

So…onward ho! Some of today’s tips come from Berry and some come from my own little brain.

  • Once a month, unsubscribe to promo and company emails you never read (or those encouraging you to buy things you don’t need). It’s easy to get on those lists to the point that you’re getting a dozen emails a day from different sources.
  • Once a year, clean out emails filed in random folders you’ve never once looked at again.
  • Have all your email addresses forward to one central inbox. Don’t run around all over the web checking email each day.
  • Are you a clean-out-you-inbox or keep-it-all-in-your-inbox kind of email person. Is it working for you?
  • Consider leaving only your actionable emails sitting in your inbox. If they’re in that spot, you know you must do something with them. I’m often able to keep my inbox to 2-4 emails.

Homework: Clean out 2-6 email folders if you have them. (You could always archive, save to your hard drive and then delete the whole thing.) Work on reducing your inbox if it’s a catch-all. Unsubscribe from extraneous promo emails.

  1. Hi Kelsey,

Boy, did I need this week’s organizing tips. My inbox is the stuff of legends…my husband can’t believe I have “that many” emails in my inbox, some important, many trivial, and tons of promo and “group” emails that I don’t need in the first place. Think I’ll get started tonight while I’m watching tv…deleting those cluttering emails might just be fun.

    • Tara -

You sound like Tech Guy. I hyperventilate anytime I see his inbox.

Now, that being said, I probably have 10k messages filed. And believe me, I don’t need all of them. So I’m making it my goal to clean out some of those folders, even delete them if I can!

And yeah, just think how free you’ll feel once you delete the stuff you don’t need!
