In The Red

Shelbyville Series

Everyone hides a secret shame…and some people run away from home believing they can leave it behind.

Originally from Houston, Roxanne Eberly now owns a lingerie boutique in a no-more-than-a-speed-bump Texas town. When a former employer sues her for violating a non-compete agreement, she turns to Jamie Wright, the ambitious, big-city attorney who recently invested in her business. But she doesn’t trust him with her secret—that she suffers from learning disabilities, but continues to fake her way through life’s little challenges. Her former employer refuses to abandon the lawsuit unless Roxanne allows the larger lingerie retailer to acquire the shop she has worked so diligently to build. Giving in to those demands may be her only option because she can’t bear failure—proving her teachers and family right about labeling her “Least Likely to Succeed.”

When his law firm suggests married associates are more likely to be considered for career advancement, Jamie Wright lines up a series of wife-shopping dates. However, he’s so busy trying to dislodge Roxanne’s butt from a legal sling that he doesn’t have much energy left for his mating safari. During a date with a blue-blood debutante, Jamie realizes Roxanne is the red-blooded woman for him. When she discovers Jamie is recruiting for a position she has no desire to fill, Roxanne rejects his marriage proposal. Because she doesn’t think a woman who peddles panties and prophylactics would make a good match for a prominent urban attorney.
