As you would imagine, most people who write are avid readers first. A friend of mine claims I can find a book for any topic…and she’s right. During stressful times in my life, I seek out books to help me understand and cope with the challenge before me.
Just the possibilities of an unopened book give me a rush. My idea of a perfect day is one spent at Barnes & Noble or Half Price Books. So, of course, when I became serious about my writing, I sought out recommendations for books on craft and other helpful topics. I’d like to share some of my favorites:
On Writing by Stephen King
Telling Lies for Fun and Profit by Lawrence Block
GMC: Goal, Motivation & Conflict by Debra Dixon
Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott
Screenplay: The Foundations of Screenwriting by Syd Field
Writing Erotic Romance by Alison Kent
You Just Don’t Understand by Deborah Tannen
The Synonym Finder – J.I. Rodale
Urban Dictionary compiled by Aaron Peckham
The Chicago Manual of Style
Self-Editing for Fiction Writers by Renni Brown and Dave King
