Yes, Kelsey Drives a SmartCar

Photo from SmartCarUSA.com

I drive a 2008 Smart ForTwo Passion Cabriolet with a little over 30,000 miles on it. Since I get a ton of questions about my adorable, yet minuscule, vehicle, I wanted to write a couple of posts to educate my readers on all things Smart. Today, I’ll give you some deets and next week, I’ll follow up by answering some FAQs.

SmartCars in general:

  • Are designed and engineered by Mercedes-Benz
  • Are 85% recyclable (is this insane or what??)
  • Have 1 liter engine displacement
  • Get approximately 34 mpg in the city and 38 mpg highway
  • Have a Tridion safety cell, which is a lot like a race car’s roll cage. [Smart says on their website: “Much like a nut is protected by its hard outside shell, the smart fortwo's occupants are protected by a steel housing that combines longitudinal and transverse members that displace impact forces over a large area of the car. So it's not about the amount of steel, but how that material will resist an impact.”]

My little convertible:

  • Has an MSRP of $17,690 for the 2012 model
  • Weighs 1853 lbs
  • Dimensions are 8.8’ long x 5.1’ wide x 5.1’ tall
  • Has a 8.7 gallon gas tank
  • Has 12 cubic feet of storage in the back

Today is Mother Goose Day, so celebrate by digging out and reading your favorite nursery rhymes. Personally, I’m still a little disturbed by Mother Hubbard living in that shoe with all those kids, but who am I to talk? Last summer, I lived in a garage. At one time, we had five humans and a dog crammed into a space with one bathroom and a two-burner stove. But at least it didn’t smell of dirty feet :-) .

Red Hot Read: Divergent

Title: Divergent

Author: Veronica Roth

Genre: Young Adult

Why Divergent is a Red Hot Read: After reading the Hunger Games series, Smarty Boy floundered a bit, trying to find something he would enjoy as much as Suzanne Collins’s work. I happened to find Divergent in O’Hare Airport and thought it looked like his kind of read. I was right, and now he can’t wait for Insurgent to hit the shelves in early May. Divergent is another dystopian story, where the protagonist Beatrice must select a faction and qualify to become a member. If she doesn’t qualify, she will be without a faction for the remainder of her life, a fate worse than death. Although I haven’t yet read Divergent personally, Smarty Boy is a big fan. What I’m a big fan of? That he loves these books with female protagonists!

PS – don’t forget today is the last day to enter my writing prompt contest. C’mon people, it’s only 250 words!

In honor of Smarty Boy’s love of baseball, today is Babe Ruth Day. One of the Babe’s famous quotes is:

“Never let the fear of striking out get in your way.” And that’s advice we can all hang onto.

In other news, today is also National Hairball Awareness Day. Believe me, I think if your cat hacks up a bundle of hair and fur and uckiness, you are probably very aware of that fact. God bless you, cat owners.

The Condom Conversation

Today, I’m sharing with you a short post I wrote when we lived overseas. Smarty Boy was about eight at the time of this conversation. Enjoy!

If people knew all the strange things kids ask, they would never, ever procreate. Luckily, I suppose, we enter into this parenting thing completely blind. Then our children lure us into a sense of safety and—BAM!—they hit us with something new.

Yesterday at the grocery store, we were standing in line and I glanced to my left. There, on a rack, were about 500 kinds of…ahem…protection. Now some people like to impulsively purchase gum or candy or even batteries. I never realized those were an impulse buy. Wishful thinking on the buyer’s part?

Of course, Smarty Boy’s attention was also caught by the array, and he pointed out the box labeled “Retarding.” Exactly what that means when it comes to condoms, I’m not 100% sure, but I think I have an idea.

So, of course, he wanted to know what they were.

Pitching my voice low to avoid the Muslim lady in front of me hearing, I said, “They’re condoms, but not something we need to talk about in the checkout line.”

“But Mom, what are they?”

“We’ll talk about it when we get outside.”

So we got to the parking lot, and he didn’t say anything else. We hopped in the car. Nothing.

I could’ve let the topic slide, but I knew I shouldn’t. I took a deep breath and asked, “So do you want to know what those were?”

“Yeah.”

“They’re condoms. Do you know what a condom is?”

“No.”

Good, I think. “They’re something that men wear on their pe—”

“Nah. Nah. NAH. NAH!” he yelled from the backseat.

“But—”

“I don’t want to talk about this anymore,” he said.

“Okay, let me know when you want me to finish my sentence.” I had to laugh. Had to.

Today is National Hug a Plumber Day. Okay, if you have a plumber at your house to hug, you’re probably having a crappy day and need someone to give YOU a hug. But butt crack and a hug? Possibly more than you can handle on a day when your toilet is overflowing…

Tech Guy’s Photo: Mosque at Sunset

I’ve been remiss on treating you to Tech Guy’s fabulous photography lately, so here’s one to feast your eyes on:

Tech Guy took many pictures of the mosques while we lived in Doha, Qatar (a tiny peninsula country just off Saudi Arabia and across the water from the UAE). This is one of my absolute favorites. In fact, it’s the background picture on my smart phone. I can still remember waking up my first day in Doha at 4am to blinding sunshine and the call to prayer.

Today is Talk Like Shakespeare Day so I recommend you pull out your bawdiest, yet most subtle, jokes and try them out on your friends. Throw in a little angst, some leggings and a few “thees,” and your friends will be thoroughly confused. Confused, but entertained :-) .

Red Hot Read: A Lady’s Revenge

Title: A Lady’s Revenge

Author: Tracey Devlyn

Genre: Historical Romantic Suspense

Why A Lady’s Revenge is a Red Hot Read: Tracey Devlyn has written a Regency romance unlike any I’ve read in the past. This book goes far beyond a standard drawing room Regency. The heroine Cora is damaged, battling back from physical torture at her enemy’s hands. And now she’s more determined than ever to make her parents’ murderer pay. The hero Guy is a member of the same spy agency, the Nexus, as Cora. Together, they heal Cora’s physical and emotional wounds, take revenge on the French and find love. This is a dark historical suspense that will capture your imagination, fuel your fears and captivate your heart.

Today is Husband Appreciation Day. If your husband is anything like Tech Guy, he deserves a ton of appreciation. So show him how much you love him with a great meal, a foot rub or any other special treatment you know he loves. ;-)
